Theologos _cc781905-5cde -3194 - bb3b - 136bad5cf58d_

2h30 / 8 km / difficult / marked 5

This is the most difficult hike on the island which goes from the village of Lakgada to the foot of the mountain of Krikelios, the peak of the island (821 m).   The path first takes a fairly steep mule track which leads to the magnificent Byzantine monastery of Aghios Ioannis Theologos. From there, the path crosses the mountainsides of wild and impressive beauty to reach the chapel of Stavros (the cross in Greek). It's a sort of end of the world, often windy, from where you have a sumptuous view of the island and the Aegean Sea. This whole area is part of Natura 2000.  It is possible to continue and reach a bauxite mine, but I do not recommend without a guide: the path is not marked and you will understand once arrived at Stavros that the island can take on an almost threatening face.
